CROSS-BORDER LINK TO BOOST MARITIME LOGISTICS ACTIVITY

Objectives

The NEXOMAR project is a cross-border cooperation initiative between Andalusia (Spain) and the Portuguese region of Alentejo-Algarve, co-financed by the European Union through the INTERREG VI A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 programme, which promotes maritime logistics activity.

Within the NEXOMAR project, various open innovation challenges have been defined, aimed at improving priority logistics processes. Specifically, challenge 1 focuses on establishing new deterrent systems to mitigate the impact of cormorants on aquaculture production facilities.

Andalusian aquaculture farms are facing significant losses caused by the great cormorant. In the Bay of Cadiz alone, some 4,000 cormorants consume 1.2 tonnes of fish per day, causing significant losses. At the European level, cormorants eliminate up to 330,000 tonnes of fish per year, and traditional deterrents are not enough. Faced with this situation, the Association of Ac companiesMarine Farming of Andalusia (ASEMA) proposes design and/or implement a deterrence system based on at digitisation y sustainability environmental for protect the facilities from aquaculture in the Euroregion.

The EONSEA project combines perception, artificial intelligence and robotics with centralised management.
